YOUR LOVE IS MY DRUG

CANNIBAL

I have decided on using the typeface called 'Oh! Mai Mai!' which is a free downloadable typeface i found on the Behance Networking Site. I have chosen this font as it is a san serif typeface and looks modern and trendy, which i think appeals to Kesha's target audience.

Experimenting with colours

voodoo masks

 In one of my previous blog posts i discussed the idea of having a different mask for each song.  I still think this is a great idea, as it allows the audience to interact with the promotional material and also gives them a brand new music experience. 

These are my mask designs, the first one being 'the cannibal' mask and the second one 'your love is my drug' mask. The facial expressions used on the masks are exactly the same as the ones used on the smaller illustration designs, keeping them all linked together.

Colours

This is my voodoo doll in the colours used on the previous illustration. I feel as though my illustration needs some shading and more detail, but overall i am pleased with the choice of colours.

Inspiration - Illustration work

Carrying on from the UV idea i came across this piece of illustration work. The colours used in the design give off the same effect as UV lighting.

I will try this out on my illustrations and see how it looks!

UV

Browsing through the Behance Network i came across a project that inspired me. This project has used UV paint to create its typography and illustrations, so you can only see it with a UV-flash light, otherwise it is just a blank surface. I was thinking of maybe using an idea similar to this for my illustrations and masks so that when a UV-flash light is shone into the crowd at a music concert everyones 'cannibal' and 'your love is my drug' masks will appear. 

The illustration in this work was designed by Jos Verwer and the typography by Trapped in Suburbia.

Vectors

This is my first vector for the 'Your love Is My Drug' doll. I now will experiment with applying colour to this vector.

Further development

After sketching up ideas for the body positions and facial expressions of my dolls, i think i have finally come to an outcome i am happy with. Below are two rough examples of exactly this. The top one represents the song 'your love is my drug' by Kesha. This is shown by the doll having a belt wrapped around her arm, which is normally used to help inserting drugs. Secondly, i have given the doll a large heart to represent love.

My doll for 'Cannibal' is positioned exactly the same, although its facial expression has changed to a more evil and twisted expression. This doll represents the theme of cannibalism. This is because in the video the lyrics talk about eating boys up, so i wanted to play on this.

Further down the line in my development work i am going to start applying some typography to my illustrations. The content of this will be from the song lyrics of both songs.

Stamps and Masks

One of the considerations on the brief says "We are looking for work that explores new ways that illustration can be integrated into the music experience." I have thought about this and came up with two ideas. My first idea is for my illustrations to be turned into stamps, so when entering the concert you are given a unique stamp, promoting the music artist, Kesha. My second idea was to turn the facial illustrations i have been developing into masks, so that when the song "Cannibal" is played everyone can place them over their faces. This idea does come across pretty freaky but will give the audience a brand new experience!

Masks

This is a project i found on the design network, Behance. I've included it in my research as it shows the many different masks that have been used in films. 

Here are my first visuals of the voodoo dolls to represent my song choices. The first one represents the song "Your Love Is My Drug" and the second one "Cannibal". I think these portray the songs well, but i feel as though it needs something else, rather than it being a flat vector image. I am also thinking of maybe adding some of the song lyrics into the illustrations.

Facial Expressions

Here i have started to look at the different facial expression my voodoo doll of Kesha could portray. With one of my songs talking about cannibalism and the other about an addiction of drugs i am concentrating more towards the evil and twisted look.

The Spooky-Voodoo Illustrations of Dholl

During my research i came across an illustrator name, Dholl. Dholl features all his illustrations around spooky voodoo dolls, which is the theme i am basing my songs by Kesha on.

The first thing I noticed about his illustrations is that the voodoo dolls eyes do not contain any pupils, making them look really creepy. I also think that by having no pupils gives the voodoo dolls more impact in the picture, allowing it to stand out from its background. 

Voodoo Dolls

My first thoughts are to base my illustration work around the theme of voodoo dolls. After coming across the image above it gave me the idea of creating my own illustrated version of a voodoo doll to represent the music artist Kesha. This doll with them be illustrated in different scenes, reflecting the song lyrics.

Kesha

One of the songs i have decided to base my illustration work around is Cannibal by Kesha. This song is off her latest album "Cannibal" and has not been released yet as a single. I've pick this song over the others because i feel as though i could put a twist in to the illustrations, reflecting the fucked up lyrics she uses.

Music Artists

Here are some music artists i may base my illustration work around.  I am drawn more towards the music of Pink and Kesha as they both have a quirkyness to their music and image. This will allow me to be more creative and open minded with my design work.
